Mike is a trustee of the Addiction Recovery Foundation and heads up its medical affairs committee. He is a consultant psychiatrist to the Causeway treatment centre and Capio Nightingale Hospital.

A general adult psychiatrist with specialist training in substance misuse, he was NHS consultant to the Riverside Substance Misuse Service in Kensington and Chelsea (1998-2002), a lecturer in psychiatry at Imperial College Medical School (1994-1997), and is author of over 20 research papers, book chapters and other articles.
